Movements of labor
Installation view
2026
This installation work was an autobiographical depiction of my current navigation as a mother and artist.
Situated on two stacked heavily-used studio tabletops are two films, back-to-back. Everything but… was projected onto the bottom tabletop asking or inviting the viewer to sit with it much like an old console tv that sat on the floor as a centerpiece of the home. A 12-hour unbroken shot of the everyday actions around the home’s kitchen sink: washing dishes that have collected all day, washing hands, preparing meals, throwing out rejected food as well as the shadows dancing on the countertop from the rising sun when nothing else is happening. The time of day on screen is always synchronized to the viewing time playing with the idea of time itself as material. This work layers domestic labor onto artistic labor and questions the legitimacy of both, pulling the viewer’s attention in two directions.
Flight Path (three skies) situated on the opposite side on the upper tabletop screen is a fictional sky constructed of collected air traffic in three distinct locations that I have lived under. Another seemingly “unbroken” shot but through time reveals its manipulation, the film absurdly examines globalization, transportation, displacement, leisure and play while also asking where is home? The tabletop’s worked surface introduced a fourth imposed landscape of plaster clouds creating unexpected harmony between the found object and film as well as a tether between the realities.
While one of these works obviously does not and cannot exist outside of the edit, the other one has equal feelings of impossibility.
